1129 – Formal approval of the Order of the Templars is granted at the Council of Troyes.

1526 – King Francis I of France, held captive in Spain, signs the Treaty of Madrid, renouncing claims to Italian territories and Burgundy.

1639 – The Fundamental Orders, considered by some as the first written constitution that created a government, are adopted in Connecticut.

1784 – The United States ratifies the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the American Revolutionary War.

1814 – Treaty of Kiel is signed, ceding Norway from Denmark to Sweden.

1858 – Napoleon III of France survives an assassination attempt by Felice Orsini, an Italian revolutionary.

1907 – An earthquake in Kingston, Jamaica, kills over 1,000 people and destroys much of the city.

1943 – Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes the first President of the United States to travel by airplane while in office, flying to the Casablanca Conference in Morocco.

1967 – The Human Be-In event takes place in San Francisco, which is a prelude to the Summer of Love and the rise of hippie culture.

2005 – The European Space Agency’s Huygens probe lands on Saturn’s moon Titan, marking the first landing on a moon other than Earth’s.
