1789 – President George Washington issued the first presidential proclamation designating a national day of Thanksgiving, calling for Americans to observe November 26 as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.

1849 – American author Edgar Allan Poe was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore. He was taken to a hospital and died four days later at age 40. The exact cause of his death remains uncertain.

1863 – President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation establishing the last Thursday of November as a national day of Thanksgiving. The annual observance helped establish the modern American Thanksgiving tradition.

1922 – Rebecca Latimer Felton of Georgia was appointed to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman to serve as a United States senator. She was formally sworn in the following month.

1932 – Iraq gained independence from the United Kingdom and was admitted to the League of Nations, formally ending the British Mandate for Mesopotamia.

1942 – Germany successfully launched the V-2 rocket on a test flight from Peenemünde. It became the first human-made object to reach the edge of space during later test flights and was the technological ancestor of modern ballistic missiles and space-launch vehicles.

1951 – The New York Giants’ Bobby Thomson hit the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning that defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers and won the National League pennant.

1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club premiered on ABC television. The children’s variety show introduced the Mouseketeers and became one of Walt Disney’s most successful early television programs.

1990 – East and West Germany were officially reunified, ending more than four decades of division. October 3 is now celebrated annually as German Unity Day.

1995 – O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman after a highly publicized criminal trial in Los Angeles. The verdict was watched live by an estimated 100 million people in the United States.
