1604 – German astronomer Johannes Kepler observed a brilliant supernova in the constellation Ophiuchus. Known today as Kepler’s Supernova, it remains the most recent supernova observed within our Milky Way galaxy.

1635 – Religious dissident Roger Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for challenging religious restrictions and colonial policies toward Native Americans. He later founded the settlement that became Providence, Rhode Island.

1701 – Yale University was founded when the Connecticut legislature approved a charter for the Collegiate School. Originally established to educate ministers, the institution was renamed Yale College in 1718.

1874 – Representatives from 22 countries signed the Treaty of Bern in Switzerland, establishing the General Postal Union. Renamed the Universal Postal Union in 1878, it helped standardize international mail delivery.

1888 – The Washington Monument officially opened to the public in Washington, D.C. Standing 555 feet tall, the monument honoring George Washington was the tallest structure in the world at the time.

1936 – Hoover Dam began transmitting hydroelectric power to Los Angeles, sending electricity approximately 266 miles across mountains and desert. The achievement demonstrated the enormous potential of the Colorado River.

1962 – Uganda gained independence from Great Britain after nearly seven decades as a British protectorate. Milton Obote became the country’s first prime minister following independence.

1963 – A massive landslide plunged into the reservoir behind Italy’s Vajont Dam, creating an enormous wave that swept through nearby communities. Approximately 2,000 people were killed in one of Europe’s deadliest engineering-related disasters.

1986 – Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera premiered at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. The production became one of the most successful musicals in theatrical history.

2012 – Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, age 15, survived an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home from school. She continued advocating for girls’ education and became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 2014.
